Sweet Corn

     River Kwai International was founded with the aim of producing canned fruits and vegetables for export. After a successful start, but due to an increasing number of canneries in the same field, in 1993 RKI decided to concentrate on the development of canned sweet corn. The company identified the 'ATS' hybrid as being suitable for cultivation in a tropical country like Thailand. The 'ATS' hybrid was developed by Dr. Taweesak Pulam, a renowned specialist in plant genetics. It has since been accepted worldwide as one of the better crispy types of sweet corn.

     The tropical climate of Thailand permits year round cultivation of sweet corn (vs. a two month growing season in the U.S. and Europe). Year round cultivation, producing as many as three crops per year, contributes not only to the efficiency to the factory through a constant infeed of raw material but also to the freshness of products to consumers.

     RKI is the largest producer of canned sweet corn kernels in Thailand with a capacity of 2,000 containers per annum, over 95% of which is exported.

Retort Pouch

     River Kwai International introduced sterilized corn on the cob in vacuum-sealed plastic bags (sometimes referred as retort pouch) to the Japanese market in 1996. This innovative packaging meets the consumer's demand as an alternative. Corn on the cob is convenient to bring along for picnics to be served as a snack while kernel corn in pouches is a substitute for the canned product and easily disposable after opening.

     Currently, RKI has expanded the market for retort pouch to serve consumers in South America, Europe and other Asian countries as well.
